What is CH and How is it Earned?

The AKC title "Champion of Record" is awarded for excellence in the conformation show ring.   It is designated by a CH prefix on the registered name.   To receive the title a dog needs to earn 15 show points with at least two major wins.   Winning a show worth 3 points or more is considered a major win.   The two major wins must be from different judges and at least one of the other wins must be from a third judge.   Note: This is conformation not confirmation.

Points given to the Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch

Points are awarded for wins in the show ring.   They start with dogs that are named Winner's Dog or Winner's Bitch.   To find out how many points you need to count the number of Vizsla* dogs of the same sex in the show.   Dogs that are absent, dismissed, disqualified, excused or have their award withheld do not count.   If you are counting using a show catalog make sure you subtract any dogs that fall into these categories.   Once you have the number of dogs use the tables below to find out how many points are awarded.   You need to find the state of the competition, then the gender of the dog, and finally the number of dog in show range your show falls into.   The numbers listed are the minimum number.

* Other breeds are awarded points in a similar fashion.   Since this is a Vizsla site and I live in Ohio, specifics are given for Vizslas shown in Ohio.

Example from the November 16, 2005 Lima Kennel Club show catalog.
2 dogs in the Puppy,  6 to  9 Months Dogs class.
2 dogs in the Puppy,  9 to 12 Months Dogs class.
1 dog  in the Puppy, 12 to 18 Months Dogs class.
1 dog  in the Bred by Exhibitor Dogs class.
1 dog  in the American-Bred Dogs class.
9 dogs in the Open Dogs class.
----
14 dogs total in the Dog classes according to the show catalog.
-1 dog was abscent.
-1 dog was dismissed for failure to stand for examination.
----
12 total dogs in the Dog classes at this show.

This show was in Ohio which is AKC division 5.   Using the charts below for Division 5, Dog, 12 in show... the Winner's Dog is awarded 4 points and a Major win.

1 bitch   in the Puppy,  6 to  9 Months Bitches class.
2 bitches in the Puppy,  9 to 12 Months Bitches class.
4 bitches in the Puppy, 12 to 18 Months Bitches class.
2 bitches in the Bred by Exhibitor Bitches class.
5 bitches in the American-Bred Bitches class*.
8 bitches in the Open Bitches class.
----
21 total bitches in the Bitches classes at this show.

Using the charts below for Division 5, Bitches, 21 in show... the Winner's Bitch is awarded 5 points and a Major win.   Congratulations to the winner, a 5 Point Major is the largest award you can earn!

* American-Bred normally doesn't have entries.   I added 5 dogs that really weren't in the show to reuse these examples below.

Best of Breed Class

The dogs other then the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch competing in the Best of Breed class do not earn CH points.   To compete in this class without first taking Winner's Dog or Winner's Bitch, you have to have already earned a Champion title.   Dogs shown this way in the Best of Breed class are called "Specials."

Finding the points awarded in the Best of Breed class is similar to the process used for Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch.   There is a twist that makes this class unique.   There are three different possible outcomes that could increase the points already earned as Winner's Dog or Winner's Bitch.

The first situation occurs with the dog that is named Best of Winners.   You need to use the above process to find the points awarded to Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch.   Best of Winners is given the larger of these two numbers.

Going back to our Lima KC show example;
Winners Dog   was earned a 4 point Major
Winners Bitch was earned a 5 point Major

If the male took Best of Winners it would be awarded a 5 Point Major.   This is what is called crossing over, when a dog takes Best of Winners and receives more points then it did as the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch.   People will say "The judge crossed" or "The judge didn't cross."

Crossing is most memorable when it increases the win to a Major win.   Say you have a show with 8 Dogs and 8 Bitches in the classes.   Winners Dog earns a 3 point Major and Winners Bitch earns a 2 point win, again I'm using Ohio Vizsla numbers.   If the judge crosses, the Winners Bitch has now earned a 3 point Major.

The second situation occurs if the Winner's Dog or Winner's Bitch is named Best Opposite Sex.   This means they were placed above all the Specials of their gender.   Again, you need to use the Winner's Dog and Winner's Bitch process to find the points awarded   Count the total number of dogs of its gender and add the total number of Champions of its gender entered in the Best of Breed class.   Remember to subtract the dogs of its gender not present, dismissed, etc.

You need to use the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch process to count the number of dogs of its gender in the show.   Add to this the number of Specials show in the Best of Breed competition.   Use this number to look up the number of points earned as you did before for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch.

Example again from the Lima Kennel Club show.
12 Dogs in the classes.
7 dogs in the Best of Breed Competition show catalog.
-1 dog that was absent.
----
18 Total

Using the charts below, if the Winners Dog took Best of Breed it would earn a 5 point Major win.   If the Winners Bitch took Best of Breed her points earned would not change.   A 5 point Major is the highest award a dog can earn at a show.

I'm not sure what would happen with the following example.   Contact me   if you'd like to share the AKC rules.

12 dogs in the Dog  classes.
21 dogs in the Bich classes.
3 Specials in the Best of Breed class.

If the Winners Dog takes Best of Breed, does it earn a 4 point Major (12 + 3 => 4 points) or a 5 point Major (21 Bitches => 5 points)   I think it is 5 points but haven't founnd specifics to back up my assumptions.
